Furisode — long-sleeved kimono, silk and gold thread
Peonies on Water
Only one in stock
Each kimono is bought one at a time in Japan; we will not have another. These are authentic Japanese kimono, worn and kept before they came this far. The marks of time — the patina, the light wear — are part of the piece.
Description
The furisode is the long-sleeved kimono — furi, to swing, sode, sleeve. In Japan it is the dress of unmarried young women, and the length of the sleeves says exactly that: they fall almost to the floor, and they move.
Here they are 106 cm.
The motif is ryūsui ni botan — peonies on running water. The current crosses the silk in broad bands drawn in gold thread, and the peonies open above it. In Japan the peony is called the king of flowers; set on water that is passing, it says what all Japanese seasonal art says: it is beautiful because it goes.
A rare size
This garment is 180 cm long. In Japan that is too big: it finds only a small number of buyers, and the price reflects it.
In Europe it is exactly right. A silk furisode that falls properly on someone 175 to 185 cm tall is close to unobtainable. What counts as a flaw in Japan is here the very reason to buy it.
Worn open over something simple it makes a long coat, with sleeves that follow the movement.
