Indigo silk child’s haori, samurai helmet motif

The Little Warrior

Only one in stock

Each kimono is bought one at a time in Japan; we will not have another. These are authentic Japanese kimono, worn and kept before they came this far. The marks of time — the patina, the light wear — are part of the piece.

Description

A child’s haori, deep indigo, worn for Shichi-Go-San — the coming-of-age milestone for five-year-old Japanese boys. On the back, a samurai helmet (kabuto), crest standing tall. On the front and sleeves, stems of dwarf bamboo.

The helmet is not a toy of war: it is a wish for protection and strength, worn once in childhood like a symbolic suit of armour. The bamboo beside it bends without breaking — the virtue wished upon a growing child.

The inside of the collar is lined in white with a woven pattern, invisible when worn closed. The original cord, white with tassels, is included.

This is the best-preserved piece among the children’s lot: no visible mark on the outer face, no open seams.
