Uchikake — embroidered bridal coat

Ivory and Scarlet

Being prepared

Only one in stock

Each kimono is bought one at a time in Japan; we will not have another. These are authentic Japanese kimono, worn and kept before they came this far. The marks of time — the patina, the light wear — are part of the piece.

Description

A hand-embroidered landscape runs across the ivory silk: old pines, thatched cottages, a flower cart, chrysanthemums, dwarf bamboo, streams. All in dyed silk and metallic threads, over a jimon woven into the silk itself.

The uchikake does not close. It rests on the shoulders and trails on the floor, which gives the design the full space of a painting. Nothing repeats here: each pine, each roof, each stream occupies its place once. This is a composition, not a print.

The whole piece is lined in dense red, and the bottom hem is padded with cotton to form a roll — the fuki. From the front you see only ivory. The moment the train moves, the red appears.

Worn open over simple clothes. It also hangs on a wall: the composition stands on its own like a painted panel.

Care

Dry clean by a specialist in antique textiles only. Never wash. Store on a wide, padded hanger away from light. The weight of the embroidered silk will distort the shoulders on a thin hanger.
